After surgery: when to contact your hospital about symptoms

Made Young Plastic Surgery building in Seoul

When a change after surgery worries you, the goal is not to diagnose it from a photograph or wait until it matches an online timeline. Use the treating hospital’s instructions and contact the medical team when you are concerned. If there is a serious emergency, seek local emergency care immediately rather than waiting for a coordinator or an overseas message to be answered.

Know which symptoms need immediate help

Severe breathing difficulty, chest pain or collapse need emergency assessment. Do not wait to complete a photo report in that situation. The NHS emergency reference below explains these signs; use the emergency service where you are located. The operating hospital can be informed alongside care, but overseas communication must not delay immediate assistance.

Report concerning wound changes promptly

Wound opening, pus or feeling feverish and unwell should prompt medical contact. Follow any additional warning instructions provided for your particular procedure. Do not try to decide from other people’s pictures whether your concern is “normal enough.” Describe what has changed and let the clinical team assess the next step.

Send a useful update, without delaying care

For a non-emergency message, include the operation and date, the symptom location, when it started and whether it is changing. Add current medicines and clear photographs only if the hospital requests or accepts them. State where you are and how the team can contact you. Use the agreed private channel, not a public review comment.

Save the escalation plan before leaving

Keep the hospital’s medical and out-of-hours contacts, a short operation summary and personal care instructions available offline. Ask what to do if the usual channel is not answered and who can help you reach care locally. A coordinator can relay information and help with communication; they should not replace an examination or decide that an alarming symptom is safe.

Consultation checklist

  • Keep the medical contact and local emergency route accessible.
  • Record the operation, symptom onset and recent changes.
  • Use the hospital’s private channel for requested images.
  • Do not let translation or paperwork delay emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

Should I wait a set number of days before asking about swelling?

Do not use a generic waiting rule. Follow your hospital’s instructions and contact the treating team about concerning or changing symptoms.

Can the team diagnose from one photograph?

A photo may help communication, but cannot guarantee a diagnosis or replace examination. Give the clinical team the information they request.

Should I wait for a reply from Korea in an emergency?

No. Seek local emergency help immediately for serious symptoms, and notify the treating hospital alongside that care.
